The first publication made around 1944 was made in black and white, until in 1969 the publications appeared in two colors, and always maintaining the abstract surrealist style. The deck is inspired by the Egyptian deck, which is why it was also known as the Toth tarot, or the Toth cards. Crowley Thoth Tarot has attracted a worldwide following, both for its striking beauty and for its complex depiction of occult knowledge. I am still waiting for a book to take me through all the detailed imagery of the cards and get in depth, deck specific guidance but I did my first reading immediately and have already seen results even without the in depth knowledge.

The Three of Wands (esoteric title Virtue) shows three gold wands crossed in the center of the card, against a bright orange background. Now Aries and Aquarius are on each side of Pisces, just as Leo and Libra are on each side of Virgo; that is to say, the correction in the Book of the Law gives a perfect symmetry in the zodiacal attribution, just as if a loop were formed at one end of the ellipse to correspond exactly with the existing loop at the other end. But decades later, we do live in times of smartphones, and our eyes have become accustomed to richer colors everywhere. Originally published in 1969, it has since come out in several different sizes and versions (including varied coloring). It's also beautifully illustrated, and the accompanying booklet is one of the more insightful and engaging I've read thus far. The artwork is second to none, and they're certainly not dark spiritually, as you may expect from cards associated with Crowley.I chose the 'Thoth Tarot', by Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris, feeling irresistibly drawn by its great artistic value (surely one of the most beautiful of all decks) and by the mysterious intricacies of the varied symbols, which makes it unique among all decks.

The back of the sleeve that the box comes in shows images of the Hierophant and the Star, along with a short background on the deck. I would highly recommend purchasing DuQuette’s book along with the deck (rather than, or in addition to, Crowley’s own Book of Thoth), because it is much easier to follow!Note: I have one small gripe here: the titles are in black letter, with light gray lettering behind them reading Trumps (for the Major Arcana), and the suit name for the Minor Arcana. But just out of reverence and celebration of the legacy itself, the graphics on the packaging could be designed a lot more beautifully, instead of just superimposing two artworks on the back and on the front (why Two of Disks and The Chariot though, is there any specific reason for it?
