About this deal

The garden, every detail of it, the bird-bath and the concrete rabbit, flashed black, white, black, white, black. Wry, observant and always seeing the empty half of the glass (unless it's filled with sludge), he travels the length of the coast of the UK by train and on foot, avowedly skipping castles and cathedrals and under-sampling cities.

English people of a certain class often said things like this, taking a satisfaction in the certainty of death, because dying was a way of avoiding the indignity of what they imagined to be a grim future. Then there were a couple of parts that crossed quite far into uncomfortable and combined with the jarring, perplexing ending, took this from great to "it's ok" for me. The challenge of Globalization and the emerging Chinese manufacturing behemoth forced her to make drastic changes. Nobody in their right mind reads Theroux for factual information, historical background or statistics. A wonderful coming of age book regarding a twelve year old Enlgish boy whose house and family were bombed during WWII.

Paul Theroux had written several travel/train books, including The Great Railway Bazaar, before he decided to learn more about Great Britain, the country in which he had been living for the past 10 years. This book goes through so many subjects from Harry’s utter heartbreak at the beginning believing his family have all been killed, to all the different character types he meets and it even touches upon sexual abuse. The occasional use of "Aah" instead of "I" is surprisingly effective at conjuring up a Geordie accent.

Then he thundered downstairs, the crack of light from the kitchen door lighting up the edge of each stair-tread. The passenger explained that he heard about a signalman that liked to read, but his post was so remote that he had no access to books. Paul Theroux undertook his journey round the coast of the United Kingdom exactly 25 years ago, in 1982. The Kingdom by the Sea is a story of Harry finding out that his family got caught in the bombing and didn't survive. Here the author perpetuates an ugly, misguided stereotype by implying that the corporal's brutal behavior is part and parcel of his sexual preference. I believed that that these people were fantasizing that they were over there on the watery horizon, at sea. He cleans up the carriage willingly with thoughts of the family at the back of his mind, also leaving a one-pound note in thanks. But this book, although a time capsule of the '80s when it comes to the current events of the time (birth of Prince William, the Falkland "issue," impending railway strike, Yorkshire ripper, IRA troubles), gives the impression that the landscapes he describes from the Cornish and rough Scottish coastlines would remain the same and be familiar today. Next second, he had broken from their hands, and was running up another garden path like a terrified rabbit.
