About this deal

A bullet left Big Ger a paraplegic in a wheelchair, and most of the mobster's money-making schemes have been taken over by other people. Alongside the book, there was also a jigsaw– and that was a particular delight for me as someone who has always done jigsaws during Christmas breaks and summer holidays. He has so far avoided exhausting the potential of Rebus, though with this many books in the series it has to be a risk.

The trial, which begins the book, is left up in the air, which either means that the series ends here or will continue. While a successful novelist, he has also had his own TV series in 2002 titled Ian Rankin’s Evil Thoughts, and in 2005 Rankin on the Staircase. He is the internationally bestselling author of the Inspector Rebus and Detective Malcolm Fox novels, as well as a string of standalone thrillers. It seems, though, that there are only a half dozen people who live in the building, including the owner who lives in the penthouse. In the United States, he has won the celebrated Edgar Award and been shortlisted for the Anthony Award.

His principal investigator, Detective Sergeant Gish, is engaging and empathetic, and certainly easier for her colleagues to work with than Detective Inspector Rebus ever was. The story is also helped by an interesting secondary storyline, which adds some good suspense and action. Now confined to a wheelchair, he spends his time looking at the Edinburgh he’s no longer a part of, and mulling over past crimes and triumphs, and perhaps, just perhaps wondering if it had all been worth it. On the case is DS Gillian Gish, who, alongside DCI Jack Milton, must identify the second corpse and talk to the building’s occupants, all of whom have something to hide.He also received several honorary degrees from various universities, such as the Hull, Abertay, St Andrews, Edinburgh, and The Open University. An unsparing yet sympathetic depiction of Edinburgh’s ignored underclass, with terrific characterisation. Whether you’re a long-time Rankin fan or new to the world of crime fiction, this event is not to be missed. And who can she trust when nobody is truly innocent - including her former mentor Rebus - and a killer walks among them?

One Hyde Park … a luxury high-rise development overlooking Hyde Park in London becomes the focus of a murder inquiry in The Rise. The actor chosen to play a younger Rebus in the new series is Richard Rankin (no relation apparently) who is known for playing Roger Wakefield in Outlander. Robert Burns’ children: how many children did the Bard have, and does he have any famous descendants? Big Ger Cafferty (Rebus’ longtime nemesis) surveys the vista of Edinburgh through a telescope from the prized position of his penthouse unit. In this occasional series, I’m going to look at some books which I have read and see what I made of the adaptation. And Malcolm Fox is on her heels, worried about how this could affect the reputation of Police Scotland.
