About this deal

I took the time to learn the basics of using a sharpening stone, but (and perhaps I shouldn’t admit this as the editor of a food site) I’ve always found it to be a chore I’d rather avoid. Outdoors, also provides many pocket knives with a stable cutting edge and excellent sharpness for everyday use.

Offers more control and leaves your knives with a better cutting edge than what you’d get just a honing rod and a pull-through manual knife sharpener. It offers interchangeable grinding discs, and a Magnetic Angle Support with a 15 grinding angle for a filigree edge, and a 20 grinding angle for a robust blade. With the 15° grinding angle, particularly fine blades made of Damascus or high-quality carbon steel can be given filigree sharpness.

So you have probably gathered from reading this article that I am a fan of the Horl 2 Knife Sharpener. The company makes the less expensive Horl 2 Cruise, but it only sharpens at a 20 degree angle; giving up the 15 degree angle is a notable sacrifice. Just a few strokes on each side of the blade is sufficient to maintain a perfectly sharp cutting edge.

However, thanks to the constant grinding angle, only a few rolls back and forth are needed for subsequent resharpening. It is quite long but also uncovers a few tips and tricks you might be interested in as well as showing a reprofile of the edge angle. In addition, they produce a grinding pattern that is equivalent to the "ex works" grind of a high-quality German kitchen knife. The revolutionary HORL 2 sharpener takes the guesswork out of the most tricky aspect of using a whetstone: getting the sharpening angle right. It is ideal for European kitchen knives, hard or soft steel, stainless and rust-resistant steels, universal blades with a large spine, very dull knives, and outdoor knives. Due to the anti-slip properties of the S-Pad, even narrow blades can be sharpened consistently and reproducibly at the required height.

It could be that your knife needs a coarser-grit stone, as that tends to be the case for extremely dull knives. Compared to our other HORL ® 2 models, it effectively achieves the desired sharpness three times as fast. With a thriving factory in the Black Forest the brand is now expanding into the international market. But, whenever you’re asking about whether a technology that offers an easier solution is good, you should be asking, good compared to what? With the rubber wheels on the roller gripping the work surface, this does need the user to force the roller to twist round and get the hang of following the angle near the tip. While you won’t have to replace the discs all that frequently, the ability to do so on the Horl just makes it feel like a better long-term investment.
