It was the prelude to the island's final annexation to the Kingdom of Greece, which occurred de facto in 1908 and de jure in 1913 after the First Balkan War. Venizelos resigned in early 1901, and for the next three years, he and his supporters waged a bitter political struggle with the Prince's faction, leading to a political and administrative deadlock on the island.

Thereafter, the Admirals Council focused on a negotiated settlement that would bring the insurrection to an end without bringing Ottoman governance of Crete to an end, but this proved impossible. We take intellectual property concerns very seriously, but many of these problems can be resolved directly by the parties involved. In a couple of pictures of the flag (for instance, one painted on a commemorative porcelain plate along with a portrait of the statesman Venizelos), the star is yellow and/or has one point (pointing towards the upper left corner) longer than the other points. Maybe blue instead of black like the Greek flag and many frescoes or some red/earth tones(also like the frescoes)? The black colour is inspired by the traditional dark clothing I have observed being worn by elders on the island during my holiday there in 2010.A monument near Chania ( photo) honours Spyros Kayales because of a courageous act in 1897 ( historical account). On 27 April 1899, an Executive Committee was created, in which a young, Athens-trained lawyer from Chania, Eleftherios Venizelos, participated as minister of justice. The cross of Saint George, a mainstay of Greek vexillology and evocative of the Orthodox faith, remains the main feature.

It seems that the flag is today being far from neutral and cannot be seen as a simple regional flag. The main objective of the project is to create a common system of exploitation and promotion of comparative advantages based on the sea, in relation to the opportunities presented by coastal-islands areas. They then decided that Crete would become an autonomous state under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire.

The main challenges include the fight against unemployment in the fisheries sector and increasing the fisheries communities’ income through activities that take advantage of the touristic assets of the area. The result is a flag which highlights the unique history and distinctive culture of Crete (the choice of colours) and yet shows the strong bond with the nation of Greece (the basic design). Just thought I'd upload the flag again because I thought the handle of the Labrys looked a bit fragile, so I made it thicker. Although no fisheries actors are formal members of the association, a local fisheries organisation sits on the project selection board of the FLAG.
