About this deal

I have never read a storybook quite like Ocean meets Sky and it is one that every child and adult should read at least once in. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc.

Unlike Ida and the Whale, another picture book about a magical journey that I just read, the goal is more clearly spelled out.Born in Hawaii and raised in Toronto, he attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he studied illustration, sculpture, and film. Finn remembers the stories his grandfather told him about a place where the ocean meets the sky: where whales and jellyfish soar and birds and castles float. While it is never explicitly stated that Finn's grandfather has passed, and never says that Finn misses him, my son understood. Ocean Meets Sky has already received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus, Booklist and SLJ.

Sentimental story, nice enough, but there's little there about Grandpa or the boy's relationship to him, really.Upon waking he finds himself sailing to that mysterious place his grandfather told him about where the ocean meets the sky. I don't usually rate picture books here, although I read enough of them with my children, but I have had this one on my 'to-read' list for some time so it deserves a formal send-off.

As someone who grew up in a time when Asians were very rarely represented in English-language picture books (other than as oddities), and even more rarely represented in English-language picture books created by authors of Asian heritage, I absolutely loved this unobtrusive integration of Asian characters and Asian cultural elements into the book. Together they also illustrated The Darkest Dark, written by Chris Hadfield and Kate Fillion, and The Antlered Ship, written by Dashka Slater. One part of the creative team - with his brother Terry Fan - known collectively as the Fan Brothers. Full of Gorgeous illustrations, this one is sure to captivate young readers, as they too, read and sail along, on this Magical Journey. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. Then there’s the hardback cover, which is actually one of those fabric hardbacks and is a dark blue that makes me think of the depths of the sea. There is no real action, and the sense of loss is perfectly muted (my 4-year old hasn't notably picked up on the implication of death).

It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. The illustrations in this story are absolutely beautiful, the ocean creatures are spectacular to look at and the story has a very comforting feel, despite the fact the young boy misses his Grandfather the story has a subtle and reassuring message that a loved one can live on in your memory. Beautiful graphite and digitally colored illustrations, which are realistic and exquisitely executed and detailed. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! The reader can clearly see how much Finn and his grandfather loved each other, even if the grandfather isn't even present in most of the book. This beautiful and poignant story has stunning illustrations throughout and explores themes of family, memory and loss.
