And on longer mountain climbs in the Lake District I did find myself thinking a more technical approach shoe would be better, such as the La Sportiva TX4 or Mammut Alnasca. Due to their sneaker-inspired design, they fitted like a glove and I immediately felt at ease with them on my feet. Visually arresting, this boot also has an upper made of full grain leather with mesh inserts that makes it particularly abrasion resistant and therefore durable.

Although they did feel a tad wider and bulkier than other shoes, perhaps because the design is not particularly streamlined. Accordingly, it’s earned a permanent spot on our packing list for trips when we know we’ll be visiting both towns or cities and wild landscapes.Their durability doesn’t come at the expense of comfort either; with the EVA foam midsole in play these boots were easy on my feet when the terrain was not. Plus the cushioning EVA midsole gives a great feel because its absorbent properties make every step wonderfully soft, even when going downhill. Despite the wide fit the Zion does a good job of holding the ankle in place without heel slip so for everyday walking these are blister free boots. The membrane has successfully blocked water from seeping in both on the trail and during our timed waterproofing test, during which we submerge boots in several inches of water for an hour.
