Kennedy Ryan’s writing grabbed hold of me from the beginning with a connection between Iris and August that spans years. The branding of a trophy wife is something that needs to be stopped and needs to be seen as wrong, because when you're moving towards something as focused as equal rights or even to stop the wage gap. Before I get into it, I have to warn readers that this book has sensitive themes that may trigger some.

The stars of this show, in my opinion, were characters by the names of August, Iris, Lotus, MiMi, and Sarai. Take a bow and KNOW that even if you can’t save them all, you are helping salvage relationships between survivors and their families. I signed up for the "bonus epilogue" that's to be released in April, but I'm really frustrated that I had to. A bad decision, years of regrets, a love that could never be, but for the dream that kept them alive!

So, the narration is perfection and made you feel all that she felt and it's totally worth having, but you miss the extra epilogue which is really good and give us more of a closure.

I fell in love with Iris “Gumbo”, an ill-fated girl, who tried so hard to believe in her love and family, just for the sake of her daughter. I told myself I was done a few times, but curiosity and a friend pushed me to pick up the book again, and again until I just couldn't. It’s raw, it’s confronting, it takes your emotions on a roller coaster and it’s also sexy and beautiful. The incredible and responsible way in which this story is handled is something I didn't know I needed until I was already reading it.

She just seemed to be a taker in the relationship and not so much a giver (if that makes sense 🤷🏻‍♀️). My first disappointement with the book is that I couldn't connect with any of the characters prior to get into the gritty parts. Kennedy Ryan has a way with words and when I listened to this book in audio, the words either went straight to my heart or sat at the forefront of my mind for me to ponder on. Wow, I was blown away with this story, not only does it awaken the awareness of domestic abuse but tells the story of two relationships, one that was destined to heal and one that had the potential to destroy.

I love her writing it was flawless and she has a way with words that you feel like you are a part of the story! While the author did a great job describing physical abuse and portraying the feeling of being trapped in a relationship, I had difficulties understanding how Iris let herself in this situation in the first place.August was just looking to blow off some steam, but he wasn’t planning on meeting someone who he would never forget.
