About this deal

Either spray early in the morning or late in the evening when pollinating insects are less likely to be active. It appears to work, but I'm a bit worried about it killing other friendly insects, such as those that prey on greenfly. Winged forms develop when overcrowding, deterioration in the host plant or seasonal changes induce a move to another plant. This means you have to spray regularly – which could be as often as every couple of days in a warm summer – to stand any chance of controlling them.

It controls whitefly by physical means NOT chemical means and can be used in BOTH the greenhouse and in the garden. Clove bud oil contains eugenol which repels insects and helps to control fungal disease and indeed I found this to be the case when some of my rose leaves covered in a white fungus disappeared after just one spray. Any time you’re trying out a new spray, make sure to test your spray out on a small section of a plant or two to make sure it’s not going to burn or kill your plants. Beneficial insects, such as ladybirds, microscopic wasps, hover flies and lacewings, feed on the aphids and are a great way to naturally control plant pests. If you are looking for more information about this product, please visit our garden centre in Thirsk where our friendly and knowledgeable staff is ready to help you. Also, most are based on “organic” or “naturally-occurring” materials and have very little persistence once sprayed on to the plant. Made with natural pyrethrins derived from plants of the chrysanthemum family, it's an organic and safe option for your garden.

Some aphids, however, spend the whole year on one type of plant, although they may be active for only part of the year. There are numerous chemical insecticides available that will kill soft-bodied insect pests, such as aphids. But their feeding also causes the plant parts they are feeding on to become curled, twisted, or otherwise distorted and disfigured, and even take on a discoloured or mottled appearance. Sprays which include ingredients like pyrethrum, plant or fish oils are ideal for tackling aphids without damaging your plants.

I chose peppermint because most bugs hightail it outta there when they get a whiff of the menthol in peppermint, especially ants. Using the measuring cup provided, add the appropriate quantity of product into clean water in the sprayer. The 250ml concentrate bottle makes up to 25L of spray solution, making it a great value for larger gardens. The best time to apply is early in the morning or in the evening and avoid applying in direct sunlight or hot weather. While they’re usually not a huge problem in small numbers, a greenfly population can grow quickly if there aren’t many of their natural predators keeping the numbers down, so there are ways in which you can eliminate them when they become an issue before they do any lasting damage to your crops and blooms! Arguably the best and most environmentally friendly way to get rid of greenfly is to encourage predators which munch their way through the aphid population without you needing to lift a finger! They are part of the biodiversity of gardens and a vital food source for other wildlife in your garden. Michael advises that we should not spray our plants with insect repellant, pesticides or chemical pest control because this can upset the natural balance of insects in the garden and end up killing beneficial insects as well as the greenflies. They are very small, just one to three millimetres long with six legs and sometimes with wings, although not all of them can fly.

Simply Green Bugs Away Spray 500ml is a 100% natural synergistic blend of Lemongrass, Lavender, Thyme and Eucalyptus. I think the hardest part is waiting until the predators arrive and deal with the pest 🙄 so I do sometimes rub greenfly off the rosebuds but try not to remove them all so I still get the predators in. Many aphids, especially those on fruits and vegetables, go through an annual cycle that involves two or more host plants. An additional problem caused by greenfly and blackfly is the sticky substance they exude, known as honeydew, which can become infested with black mould – this stops leaves photosynthesising and inhibits plant growth.Greenfly are part of the larger group known as aphids, which also includes blackfly, root aphids and woolly aphids.
