Volunteering in the summer of 1964 to help voters to register in the small town of Pineyville, Mississippi, college student Celeste Tyree befriends several locals, learns powerful lessons about race and social change, and is targeted by people who view her as a threatening representation of unwanted change.

The book includes elements of a romance, and it tells of a mysterious death of a child that may have been murder. Nicholas has a genuine way with words, a keen grasp of visual and emotional metaphor, and the novel illuminates the internal consequences of institutionalized racism and the often suppressed connections between South and North. Page after page I felt tired, sore, rundown, hot and sticky along with Celeste, and the author did a very good job describing the events that took place in two summer months. More importantly, it is an interesting read about one young woman from the North and several locals of Pineyville, Mississippi trying to make a small change with voters rights. Celeste and a local minister attempt to breach the resistance of the white Registrar and register at least a few black voters before Celeste heads back North.A modern, detached residence which is situated in an elevated location within an exclusive development of approximately 140 similar style and size homes.
