About this deal

Laura is a wonderful character to read, she is brightly written, vibrant with quiet intelligence but smudged round the edges by her experiences making her very real, we feel her pain at rejection of friendship by Tariq, we soar with her as she runs across the sands, and we take hope from her grit as she faces peril. With stunning depictions of the craggy Cornish coastline and a completely compelling plot this is the perfect book to curl up with this winter. When her blossoming friendship with the adopted son of a local merchant goes badly, Laura blames herself, but as messages strewn in her path to school reveal, there is a dark secret to St Ives, and Laura has got herself wrapped up in the middle of it. I thought he was interesting because in the beginning he looked like a normal person who might have had a very bad past and moved in to start a new life but then it turns out that he is actually a detective undercover and solving a mystery.

My only qualm was its similarities to Kat Wolfe, and also (similarly to Kat Wolfe) the over-the-top ridiculous bad-guy dialogue that felt better suited to those dognappers in 101 Dalmatians or Scooby-Doo villains. Her bestselling One Dollar Horse series was followed by YA horse romance, The Glory, now optioned for film. Laura is a cared-for child , she’s been shunted from foster home to foster homes whilst her uncle was unaware of her birth thanks to the estrangement after his own parents divorced taking a child each, this is far from the privately educated protagonists of yore. You'll have an opinion on all of them, especially Laura Marlin herself, who is an incredibly passionate, intelligent and brave young girl.

When orphaned Laura Marlin is sent from the children’s home to live with her uncle in Cornwall, she dreams of a life of excitement just like the characters in her favourite detective novels. So when she’s sent from the children’s home to live with her uncle in Cornwall, she’s thrilled to be caught up in a real-life mystery. Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. When she befriends ‘non-english speaking’ Tariq she knows something is wrong when he starts acting strangely and rejects their friendship. At first she investigates the mysteries she comes across for pleasure more than anything else, but she soon finds that things are getting scary and dangerous.

After walking the shore and getting my feet wet enjoying the view I found a nice log to sit and enjoy. He is horribly thin, he has bruises on his arms, and he is clearly afraid of his adopted parents the Mukhtars. The heroine, 11-year-old orphan Laura Marlin, has been rescued from the children's home by her mysterious uncle, Calvin Redfern.A really cracking younger (8 to 12) kids adventure novel very much in the Enid Blyton mood but brought right up to date with a daring female lead, traffic'd children, criminal gangs, hidden messages and shady characters.
