About this deal

At least this time, though, Cathy has an ally, a neighbor who’s just moved to the apartment above her, Stuart. As their relationship goes on that good side disappears completely and she’s filled with fear and anxiety. Elizabeth Haynes grew up in Seaford, Sussex and studied English, German and Art History at Leicester University. Told from the point of the view of a female victim, this first novel is utterly gripping, extremely well told and considerably more detailed and textured than the typical crime thriller. I loved this book and would happily recommend it to my female friends both as a brilliant psychological thriller and an interesting window into the world of OCD and obsession.

Porém, como regra geral, toda a descida é uma potencial subida, Cathy lá encontra algures a corda libertadora! It is an addictive, dark and disturbing psychological thriller that was keeping me on my nerves … Nothing is sugar-coated, everything is raw and hits you right in the gut. And I thought that if I ever had to choose who to be raped by, Lee or Tony, it would have to be Tony from the Consequences and I would thank my lucky stars that he was even an option to choose from, one of the two evils. I was guilty of having very fixed ideas about violence in the home and the sort of people who were victims of it, and this stereotype was challenged in every way by the reports I was analysing. Encouraging her to confront her fears, he sparks unexpected hope and the possibility of love and a normal life.I honestly did not care about 70% of the repetetive and useless information that was offered without advancing the story or enlightening the reader about the characters in the slightest. I especially didn't think it made sense that this person who was so paranoid she spent hours checking her door, would go walking around in dark alleyways to check on her crappy friend. Alternating chapters take us back to the past, four years ago and we slowly witness the events that brought Cathy to this point in her life. One of my only grips is the length, the first 50% could have been condensed, but all and all I enjoyed this one.

unsettling to see the character of Catherine as she was before and as she is now - it at first seems like you're reading the POVs of two different characters. One moment I believed her side of the story, and the next, I thought she was a total mental case, counting every single step up to her flat and checking things six times. Real friends would never take your boyfriend’s word over yours and then try and guilt you into going back to him or taking the blame.Good lord, if he’s ever released again he needs an ankle bracelet that goes off if it even gets into the same town as her! Elizabeth Haynes’s CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger longlisted Into the Darkest Corner has been quite a success due to keen marketing and, more importantly, word of mouth. She previously worked as a police intelligence analyst and lives in Norfolk with her husband and son. So yeah, to sum things up, the first half of Into the Darkest Corner is boring—good for setting up Cathy’s ‘before’ and ‘after’ selves so the reader can see the differences but boring, nevertheless. The two different writing styles are what makes this book so haunting; it’s like watching a car crash, you can see Cathy’s happy and party-like attitude slowly dissolving.
