So far as I can make out the chain to disc interface is a crude anti-kick back measure (slipping clutch) the danger so far as kick back is concerned is if the job (eg: timber) closes up on the disc and the disc (along with the rest of the grinder) decides to climb out of the job with some force, if that happens then it's danger dead ahead. Reports have been received of injuries arising from kickback caused by the chainsaw gripping the cutting surface and forcing the angle grinder to sharply turn or jump out of the hand of the operator.
