I'd have liked to read the event itself inasmuch as Sir Terry trusts me to use my imagination and make inferences. Tapping into such surgical moments of levity it feels like the MCU should take classes from Sir Terry. It doesn't help that dwarves (and therefore Carrot) are very literal creatures that don't know sarcasm or puns or figures of speech. The new Corporal doesn’t quite understand the city ways of Thieves Guilds, The Shades, Dwarf Bars, or his superior officer being drunk most of the day; but under the watchful tutelage of the shabbiest Policemen of all time, he’ll go far.

Carrot's arrival changes this; Whereas the existing officers are either cynical, incompetent, mildly crooked or all three, Carrot is honest, straightforward and idealistic. Bristol has become famous for its urban foxes (although they apparently operate in all largish greenish cities in the UK). For all of it, I give it 5 stars - and, without much further ado embark on the rest on my Ankh Morpork City Watch reread.Carrot's actions and words in this scene mirror the behaviour of the stereotypical British friendly neighbourhood bobby attempting to break up a family argument or innocent street brawl. As you read, imagine that there is a meter whose arrow jumps when you smile, moves further right when you chuckle and spikes into the red eleven when you laugh out loud. p. 104] The bit about the hero killing a monster in a lake, only to have the monster's mum come right down the hall the next day and complain, is a reference to Grendel and his mother, two famous monsters from the Beowulf saga. Vimes is introduced here, with even some foreshadowing about the kind of hero he will be throughout the series, but also so is Lady Sybil Ramkin.

On the one hand 'whittle' simply means something reduced in size (usually by means of slicing bits and pieces off it), while on the other hand Sir Frank Whittle was the inventor of the modern aircraft jet engine. And then you hated her and, and just when you thought you'd got her, it, out of your whatever, then she opened her great booming rotten heart to you, caught you off bal, bal, bal, thing. And if they can't bring down this fire-breathing tyrant and reinstate their own, slightly less dangerous one, Ankh-Morpork might be lost. I’m lucky as I haven’t read every Discworld yet, but I know a day will come when I’ve read everything new to me. The Patrician, current ruler of Ankh Morpork, sees this as the best way to maintain a kind of peace. A fun and highly intelligent fantasy set in the ancient and degraded city of Ankh-Morpork following the daring investigations of the most unlikely city guards in literature. But down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid.

It is the task of the Night Watch – Captain Vimes, Sergeant Colon, Corporal Nobbs, and new volunteer Carrot Ironfoundersson – to stop them, with some help from the Librarian of the Unseen University, an orangutan trying to get the stolen book back. The game includes 90 Discworld character illustrations drawn by Stephen Player and respective text quotes from over twenty Discworld novels. Mister Critchley, where I work, he oppresses me morning, noon and night, shouting at me and everything. El Gremio de Asesinos y el de Ladrones reciben una cuota de asesinatos y robos 'razonables', y el sistema funciona con normalidad. To reintegrate monarchy in a more or less functional system, some conservatives have the ridiculous plan to use some magic, they think they have in control, which escalates to epic failing and becoming victims instead.

The characterisations are stellar, drawing the reader in with ease into the fantastical world building. I've listened to Tony Robinson read the best third of the book, laughed about eleven times and chortled more. I’ve been told The Colour of Magic has dated somewhat but by Discworld book seven Pratchett was fully in his stride. The story follows a plot by a secret brotherhood, the Unique and Supreme Lodge of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night, to overthrow the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork and install a puppet king, under the control of the Supreme Grand Master (Vetinari's secretary, Lupine Wonse). Wonse falls to his death after the very literal Carrot hits him with a thrown copy of Laws and Ordinances of Ankh-Morpork. The TRUE answer is that when I was writing the book an electrician was rewiring our house and the nickname of his red-haired apprentice was Carrot. Some readers felt that this was a reference to Larry Niven's Ringworld series, where the main character, Louis Wu, always uses the phrase "There ain't no justice" (abbreviated as "TANJ") while others thought this far-fetched for such a common expression.
