That's why I chose the Dyna Comp - they obviously have the recipe right since it's basically the industry standard in compression pedals, used by so many players for so long. This frees me up to not think about compression any more - just play. Play with a significantly better sound than before. The Script Dyna Comp Compressor combines that old school sound with a couple upgrades for modern gigging convenience. Spec'd from our own 1976 Dyna Comp Compressor, this pedal is built around the rare CA3080 "metal can" integrated circuit (IC), which yields quieter operation, greater transparency, and increased dynamic range. Transconductance is a way to measure the gain of an amplifier relating the input voltage with the output current and usually designated with the letter gm and measured in Siemens. In a nutshell, the CA3080 is basically an amplifier whose differential input voltage produces an output current. One consideration to make is how much control you'd like over the effect. Compression can be a bit of a dark art, and really mastering it can take some time, so beginners might want want to opt for something simple that offers more of a ‘set and play’ functionality with just a few knobs, or maybe even a single one. If you know what sound you want, and you either know how to adjust the parameters to get it or you’re well up for the challenge of trying, then look for something with a few more controls on it. Do different styles of music need different compressors? Before we really dig into the details, it would be important to note where in the signal chain the Dyna Comp is most effective. In this review, I ran the Dyna Comp straight into the amp with no pedals in front of it. However, if you are adding this pedal to your signal chain, I found it best to put it at the very front, after your tuner pedal, but before the rest of your pedals. My chain consists of distortion, phaser, chorus, reverb, and wah pedals. Generally speaking, I found that having the Dyna Comp before all of these pedals left the effects unaffected, and only impacted my tone, which is what I wanted. So, win-win! How to use your Dyna Comp The other issue is that it constantly changes. David switches in and out different pedals over time and it’s hard to find specific pedals that he uses throughout his entire career.

It’s really important you choose an amp that suits your situation. If you only play for fun at home, then a high powered tube amp will not only drive your neighbors or family nuts, but it won’t sound good at low volumes. It won’t sound bad at low volumes, but you won’t get the warmth as explained later. The transistors Q4 and Q5 work as switches, when the voltage at their bases is over the Vbe (0.6V typ), the transistor will conduct allowing the current to flow through the R13 resistor (150K). The big C8 capacitor (10uF) will act as a low pass filter, making the voltage at the base of Q5 to change slowly and follow the general envelope of the guitar signal.Released in 1972, the Dyna Comp was one of the first compressors on the market. It was the basis for the heralded Ross Compressor and paved the way for staples such as the Boss CS-2 and CS-3. What's Not To Like? Fuzz distortion is an important component of David Gilmour’s tone. In the 60s, fuzz distortion was common as there weren’t many distortion or overdrive options available. David started with a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face (as seen in my Jimi Hendrix guide) and eventually moved over to the well known Big Muff in the late 70s. Therefore, the MXR Dyna Comp input resistance is 1MΩ (almost the value of the biasing resistor R2) which accounts for almost the entire signal loading at the input and can be considered a good/high input impedance. 3.1 Input Buffer Frequency Response. The CA3080 has a differential input, it amplifies the current differences between the inverting (-) and non-inverting (+) inputs.

This pedal gives you the classic Big Muff sound that David has used throughout his career in a smaller casing. The original Big Muff is a massive pedal, so it’s nice to see a modern version with a more pedalboard-friendly size. The bias point for the inverting and non-inverting input is around 4V, the image below can help to understand how to calculate this bias point:When opening the box for the Dyna Comp Bass, the first thing you might notice is that the power-adapter box is larger than the pedal itself. This mini-format compressor is about as small as one can make a pedal these days, and for a travel rig or someone who doesn’t want much more than a tuner onstage, the Dyna Comp Bass can speak volumes. A lower sensitivity setting is probably best for rhythm playing, as it lets you preserve the expressive dynamics of your strumming or riffing, only catching the peaks when you hit the strings too hard. A protection diode D3 helps against reverse polarity connection. Some schematics include this diode in series and some in parallel with the 9V source, both ideas will work fine.

Whether you choose a digital delay or an analog delay should depend on what type of variety you would like to have available with your delay and the overall sound of the delay. This is due to the fact that you’ve probably boosted the overall output of the signal after the compressor, which makes it louder than it was before compressing it (and louder is ALWAYS better!). As with any pedal, size can matter. We’re all looking to make gigging, practicing and recording easier, and a more compact pedalboard can aid this. A smaller pedal means that it takes less space on your board, so you can either have a smaller board (less to carry), or more pedals (more fun). If space isn’t an issue – maybe you’re only after one or two pedals, or you’ve got plenty of room in the van – or someone carries your gear for you (that’s the dream), then you don’t need to worry about size. You’ll probably find that the bigger pedals will have more functionality and flexibility too. How we choose products MOD: The output series 0.05uF capacitor C9 can be enlarged to a 1uF to give to the effect a full bottom end response. 7. Resources. You can trust Guitar World Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing guitar products so you can choose the best for you. Electro-Harmonix Nano Big Muff The Deluxe model retains the Output and Sensitivity control from the original which adjusts the volume (Output) and the sustain (Sensitivity). As many have proven with the original Dyna Comp, these two simple controls have plenty of sound shaping ability. The Nebulus by Empress is a high-quality pedal with a lot of different options. You can achieve rotary style effects, 60s or 70s style flangers or a few different types of chorus. This rig gives you possibly the best amp and guitar combination for home use and provides a full range of effect pedals to cover David’s entire career. You have access to a vibe, phaser, flanger and chorus pedal which means you can tweak each pedal and achieve the closest match to any effect you hear on early or late albums. In the world of compressors, there are two schools of thought. One ideal holds that compressors should subtle, ninja-like, there but not there. Fans of the Barber Tone Press and (to some degree) the Keeley Compressor fall into this camp. The other ideal holds that compressors are only worth their salt if they add some real texture of their own, building in a flavor that somehow does more than just rein in the peaks and valleys of the EQ. The king of this latter school of thought is the MXR Dyna Comp.
