But through the morning and into the afternoon a relative calm seemed to have been established across much of Gaza. Summer 1945. The Second World War is finally over and Yossi, Leo and Mordecai are among three hundred children who arrive in the English Lake District. Having survived the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps, they’ve finally reached a place of safety and peace, where they can hopefully begin to recover. The released hostages were then flown to medical facilities around Israel, where they would be reunited with loved ones. There was celebration among hostages’ families and supporters gathered in Tel Aviv. Listen to a podcast with Exploring Childrens Literature here . It is available on all major podcast platforms. Even though the story is tragic, it teaches about hope and perseverance, even when things are really hard.

NEW book club resource containing discussion questions and writing activities available from the National Literacy Trust here From three boys, escaping the horrors of the Nazi Concentration Camps to them living together in peace and harmony. This book truly showed me, how the terrors of WW2, and the policies of the Nazis. affected young kids’ lives. My enjoyment for this book could not be expressed, as it showed me how powerful friendship really is.

In the occupied West Bank, families waited anxiously throughout the day for news of the prisoners due to be freed. By the war’s end, the Allies were producing five times more aircraft than the Germans. On April 1, 1918, the British created the Royal Air Force, or RAF, the first air force to be a separate military branch independent from the navy or army. Second Battle of the Marne Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters are expected to gather in London for the latest demonstration calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The Metropolitan police will be on high alert and about 1,500 officers will be deployed for the protests on Saturday. I would definitely recommend this book to my teachers and to all children aged 10+, who are interested in World War 2 and its aftermath. The First Battle of the Isonzo took place in the late spring of 1915, soon after Italy’s entrance into the war on the Allied side. In the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, also known as the Battle of Caporetto (October 1917), German reinforcements helped Austria-Hungary win a decisive victory.

The following list highlights just some of the conflicts that have impacted the lives of people from the United Kingdom, the British Empire and the Commonwealth since 1900. The museum records and preserves stories from many of these conflicts amongst its collections, which you can search here. The first major camp to be liberated was Majdanek near Lublin, Poland in July 1944. Surprised by the rapid Soviet advance from the east, the Germans attempted to hide the evidence of mass murder by demolishing much of the camp, but parts - including the gas chambers - were left standing. I’m a big fan of history and read a lot of historical fiction. This book had an interesting and unusual focus because it is about what happened after the war, not during it. I learnt all about the work of the Red Cross, reuniting children from the concentration camps. Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, Lake District Holocaust Project, the Huddersfield Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre, the National Holocaust Centre & Museum and the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy’s Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Programme has been amazing. The story was very interesting, and also very sad, as the boys were sent to Calgarth Estate to get better because they were very traumatised, had lost everything and were in very poor health.Tom: Yes, I met and talked to three of them and have worked with a man who had interviewed dozens of them. That means I am very confident what I have written is authentic: it is based in real events. I wanted to make sure of that to be respectful to the memory of those who survived and those who didn’t.
