Description

written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is an illustrated children's story book, published in 2000 by Alison Green Books.

We love this book too, such a great rhyming structure to it and as always the illustrations are lovely! You could also read the story before a trip or a holiday to discuss with a young child what they should do if they ever do become lost (not a comfortable idea to entertain but it is certainly an important subject to discuss if you feel your little one is old enough).

Poor Butterfly keeps finding animals that fit the little monkey’s description but they aren’t quite right. What a great combination Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler are and they continue their superb partnership with 'Monkey Puzzle' in which a little monkey loses his Mum. Monkey Puzzle' isn't quite up there with the very best of Donaldson/Scheffler (Gruffalo, Snail and the Whale etc.

and, of course, it has a very happy ending with little monkey, in her arms, exclaiming delightfully, 'Mum! He moved to England in 1982 to study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art, and then set up home in London. We loved using the clues to guess who the butterfly would find based on the information it was given. Some other JD books are more complex (more suitable for older kids) but this one is a massive hit for a very first taste of books. My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old.

I hope that the treasure trove of books and activities allows you to take away a new gem, or a nugget that inspires you. My daughter is 11 months old and we have been reading this book multiple, multiple times a day for weeks. The use of descriptive language can be used in class as a learning tool when covering a wide range of vocabulary tasks, from its use of quatrains and other rhyming to the vast array of descriptions which can be used when teaching about adjectives, nouns and verbs. Before you turn the page there is always a clue as to which animal is next, so as you read you can guess what’s coming up next. Little monkey has lost his mum but a passing butterfly tells him that she will help him to find her. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. You will find Julia Donaldson’s brilliant rhymes and Axel Scheffler’s wonderful illustrations along with repetition, clues, jungle animals and a great big hug.

Accompanied and graced by Axel Scheffler's colourful and imaginatively realistic illustrations (which are truly as much of an aesthetic delight as are the author's, as are Julia Donaldson's engaging and descriptive verses), Where's My Mom is in my opinion a perfect read-aloud and a fun way of for one explaining how misunderstandings and not enough presented information can cause confusion and for two, Where's my Mom also introduces some basic zoology to very young children (namely that not all animals have offspring that look like miniature versions of themselves). Julia Donaldson, an acclaimed British author, is known for her knack for storytelling and her ability to craft enchanting tales that resonate with both children and adults. As the monkey and the butterfly continue their exploration, they eventually stumble upon the monkey's father. It also had a lovely link that although many babies look like their mum/dad, the butterfly's children are caterpillars. It could be very interactive as there’s repetition which the children could join in with, you could ask the children to guess the animal using the butterflies descriptions, ask how they think the monkey might be feeling at the start, middle and end as he goes on his adventure to find his mum, you could question why the butterflies babies don’t look like her and talk about the process of the how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. The book can be used to teach children about different kinds of animals in the jungle and they can use can role-play to re-tell the story. I love the way that children learn that not all animal babies look like their parents in this story.
