Anyone who’s writing epic of secondary world fantasy knows Robert Jordan isn’t just a part of the landscape, he’s a monolith within the landscape.

This installment too is similar—an attack of Darkhounds gets Rand and his posse moving and later there is a trolloc attack. I lost count of how many times I yelled at characters to shut up because I was frustrated with them and their tired lines. Open religious and political conflicts add a gritty realism, while the cities and courts provide plenty of drama and splendor.

There was a moment towards the end that I considered, against my better judgment, to continue with the series. Egwene al'Vere continues to chafe under the instruction of Aiel Wise Ones, eager to learn faster than they think is wise, and Moiraine Damodred grows increasingly desperate to find her way into Rand's circle of trust. Aviendha attempts once again to settle her debt to Rand by giving him the sword of King Laman; he spoils it by giving back the hilt and sheath, but keeps the heron-marked blade.

Nynaeve agrees, but only if Siuan and Leane will let her study them and Logain, to learn whether stilling can be Healed.

Finally, This is the book in which Moiraine has her own crowning moment of awesomeness in a fight against Lanfear. Jordan does deliver the whole meal, albeit, under a mountain of napkins you have to remove, piece by piece, before digging in. Part of me feels bad giving this book such a low score, such a scathing review, since I should have just recognized this book wasn't for me and walked away accordingly. We will live on what can be found wild or hunted or bought - if there is anyone with food to sell - until I can have the Tairens increase what they are bringing up from Tear.
