SusanS: I think for me it goes back to the central conceit just not working great for me, The “manipulative deception” you reference was central to the “twist”, but the instances of what I saw as misdirection – the restaurant bill that Miranda finds, for one – felt heavy-handed and yeah, a little dishonest. These three women are strangers who have only one thing in common: They’ve all been stood up on the same day, the very worst day to be stood up – Valentine’s Day. She had a bad breakup with her last boyfriend, which makes her wary of getting into another relationship, but she has a lot of close friends, the closest of whom is her longtime roommate and bestie, Fiona. She first tells Joseph she has a boyfriend, so even though there are definite vibes between them, they are platonic. Had a lot of problems with the narrative, I really never warmed to Joseph and his emotionally manipulative ass. Beth O'Leary's latest novel opens with three women - Siobhan, Miranda and Jane - who have all been stood up on Valentine's Day by the same man.And the more I learned about Joseph, the more he wormed his way into my heart just like the heroines. I would have loved to spend more time with Jane’s 70-something gay friends, who were figuring out how to come out to their one living parent, and Miranda’s snarky twin sisters/roommates felt like they needed their own book. The three women are angry, worried, or unsurprised to be stood up, depending on their personal level of self-esteem and patience. This information is going behind spoiler tags so please note it is a Major Spoiler, but I’m keeping the specifics somewhat vague. This book is 100% worth reading this Summer, if you like romance, drama and a large plot twist that makes you audibly gasp, you’ll love this!

I probably found The Road Trip a bit more compelling than The No-Show, but it also had hugely problematic character issues that brought the grade down.Strong prose and characterization go a long way with her, though if they are combined with an unusual plot or setting, all the better. His big smiles and charming nature melted my heart, similarly to Siobhan, Miranda and Jane (of whom his interactions were my favourite) and despite its sadness, The No-Showmade me feel like I was enveloped in the warmest of hugs from start to finish. Throughout the book you get to know the three leading ladies Siobhan, Miranda and Jane, I really enjoy a book from the different characters’ perspectives, I find it incredibly interesting as it really speeds up the pace of the book for me. Once again I’ll be counting down the days to Beth’s next book already, and wondering what I can read to fill the void in the meantime. I have a feeling I would read it and think I’d rather have read the same basic concept from the guy’s singular point of view.

Kaetrin: I think The Flatshare was a romance but not everyone did, and with The Road Trip, Jennie saw it as romance while to me it wasn’t so clear. He’s either a heartless bastard or the great guy he mostly appears to be, but how to reconcile the two? They’ve not known each other long but their friendship is fast becoming the brightest part of her new life in Winchester.
