As Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc battle it out head-to-head in the most hotly contested championship in years, this in-depth book, with a foreword from Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, tells the story of how the sport evolved into the exhilarating high octane spectacle it is today. He has led the Haas F1 team since its inception, debuting in F1 in the 2016 season, and since then has also gone on to appear in the hit Netflix show Drive to Survive. Topics range from memorable Formula 1 events, to technologies and their impacts, to rivalries in the sport. There will be more sprint races – trialled in 2021 – and greater fan interest driven by Netflix’s hugely successful ‘Drive to Survive’ series. F1 is higher on the chain, even if in pure motorsport terms to a fan they're obviously different paths. A really interesting read, and I learnt a lot of new things from it such as the origins of ‘British Racing Green’ and information about technical innovations of the early years, and I also agree that there are some great photographs from the 1950s-70s in the book (particularly one of the 1959 French GP). Different people and cultures prefer different things, and I'm not going to say who is most right, although it is hard to beat Barbie Jeep racing down a steep dirt hill.

A must-read for completists or for those new to the sport, F1: The Pinnacle is a fascinating insight into one of the most exciting and dangerous sports in the world.

On the one hand he’s been around motorsports for over 35 years, starting his career as a rally mechanic in 1986 and then switching to the management side before moving into F1 in 2001 with Jaguar Racing. Along with changes to circuits and the technology of the cars, this book highlights the commercial changes and the controversies that threatened to split the sport apart - such as the threat of breakaway series proposed at various times by teams. Originally from Altrincham, Simon Arron grew up near Oulton Park, writing and photographing club races for the local newspaper and subsequently Motoring News, until he was taken on as a full-time reporter in 1982. In my eyes, it is impossible to directly compare F1 to another series like WRC/X, MotoGP or LMH/DPi. The book begins, obviously enough, with the dawn of modern F1 racing, in 1950, all sketched out on one single page and then moves forward to 1957 and then 1958, again with one page each, before skipping forward to 1968 and then 1973. The curation of said ‘pivotal events’ is what sets ‘The Pinnacle’ apart – Arron and Dodgin’s deep insider knowledge means that those highlighted go beyond the clichés and received narrative. Technical changes aimed at levelling the playing field for the teams combined with the sport’s tightening budget cap have made the races closer than ever. The book will link technical progress with the personalities involved, indeed many of the swiftest changes have come about as a result of accidents or tragedies - the death of Roland Ratzenberger at Imola in 1994, the same weekend as Ayrton Senna, could have been avoided by the HANS safety device.Along with changes to circuits and the technology of the cars, this book highlights the commercial changes and the controversies that threatened to split the sport apart - such as the threat of breakaway series proposed at various times by teams. The first part is dedicated to the sport itself and how it came to be, including grid setup and other details such as this.

There will be more sprint races — trialled in 2021 — and greater fan interest driven by Netflix’s hugely successful ‘Drive to Survive’ series. This book is perfect to teach others a little about the sport even if they are just picking it up from my table and browsing through. He has written about and photographed motor sport ever since, covering events at more than 100 venues across six continents, from Phillip Island in Australia to Le Mans, Indianapolis, Kyalami, Interlagos, Suzuka and Curaçao.Technical changes aimed at levelling the playing field for the teams combined with the sport’s tightening budget cap have made the races closer than ever. Motorsport is different from ball and stick sports in that the sporting implements (cars) from different disciplines can be directly compared, using power and weight figures, top speed, average speed around a track, and so on. This is more of a high level overview of F1 racing through the years and how it got to where it is today.
