Description

Again, as a new old listener I am just amazed this came out in 1990, with much of it recorded in 1989. Language - Regardless of country of origin all tracks are sung in English, unless otherwise stated in our description. I could deal with the warping but the fact that it skips right in the chorus of “Freedom 90” is unforgivable.

You can hear The Kinks, you can sense The Smiths and a love of the 60s but most of all you can hear The Arctic Monkeys. I'm not a huge fan of his music in general although his talent and musicianship is without question.Reading all the negative reactions about this pressing I was wondering what was going on with my copy (which was still sealed). Absolutely love this album, but I can't get over the way it sounds on the more acoustic tracks – I don't think it's an issue with the pressing, it's something more fundamental about how they were produced and mixed.

However, his legacy is there and this album particularly showcases his fantastic songwriting ability and musicianship. The sleeve is printed with valuable information and whilst necessary someone could have the brainwave of also including a non static paper sleeve to sit in the cover next to the cardboard one, if it costs a few pennies more than so be it. Praying For Time is the worst culprit – all top end, with a bit of bass, and almost nothing in the middle.

I've become used to expecting modern pressings to be stacked with static that takes a long time to dissipate and this is no exception. A fabulous album, these tracks still sound as great today as they did when it was released back in the 90s. Additionally there seems to be an unusually large build up of static - not sure if this is the composition of the vinyl or the inner sleeve or a combination of the two.

A good wipe with a carbon fibre brush removed much of this but I think I'm going to have to put this through my record cleaning system; not something I would have expected to do immediately. When will record companies ever learn that these sleeves result in inevitable scuffing and markings as the disc has to be tightly held whilst it is extracted. George's vocals have a weird echo and a huge trail of reverb applied to them that removes so much definition and presence without really creating any space or depth in the way I imagine it was meant to.
