She drives to Markham's country house and en route picks up hitchhiker Jimmy, who agrees to pose as her lawyer. I know I recently said this about a previous film I watched but this is very Edgar Wallace, Maybe I only feel that way because I've been reading him lately but then again his impact on mysteries and thriller since the 20s is not only undeniable but prodigious. The print is reasonable, despite some scratching and the occasional bleaching that seems to be a feature of Renown releases.

THE HOUSE OF BLACKMAIL (1953), starring William Sylvester, a likeable American actor with an elegant and throwaway style that's ideal for this Agatha Christie-like who-dunnit, about a group of people holed up in a country manor, each suspecting the others of murdering a blackmailer. An Army officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) must solve the murder of a blackmailer or be charged themselves. There is much intrigue and some witty dialogue to be enjoyed in this early fifties B-film, which reveals its small budget with its studio-bound setting and recycled score (at one point, it sounded like something from a Norman Wisdom film! Four stars for this one, although I found it cosy rather than scarey, right down to the music - pure 1950s BBC Home Service! On the way she picks up a hitchhiker Jimmy (William Sylvester) and hatches a plan to trick the blackmailer by having Jimmy play her fiancé and lawyer. A MATTER OF MURDER (1949) - there are no cast or crew credits on this poor old remnant of a film, but it's efficiently directed by John Gilling, who later went on to better things like the TV series, The Saint, and Hammer Horrors. Genre Drama | Crime Synopsis A blackmailer is murdered, and the police find that there is a long list of suspects who wanted to see him dead.We enjoyed it from a film history point of view, and sat through until the end, despite a terrible print and even worse sound quality. After some sparring from Jimmy, Carol agrees to pay the money, but is unable to withdraw it from her bank until morning.

The second film the editing is not so good, blacks out and then starts on a new bit of film but otherwise good.In British Sound Films: The Studio Years 1928–1959 David Quinlan rated the film as "mediocre", writing: "Very modest version of traditional thriller. It’s about the characters’ interaction – not wanting to be alone or with any of the others either – and also keeps us guessing as to whether Jimmy is the escaped prisoner or not. Unusually, the lead female role - played here by Mary Germaine - has a much more substantial role in this mystery as they attempt to identify the murderer.
