Description

The illustrations are beautiful. It’s a calming book where you are able to follow the journey of water. The main character pours water from a bottle into a stream and we go on a journey with the water from a little stream, to the ocean, to the clouds, to the ground. A great book to learn about the water cycle. The real triumph of this book is in the almost otherworldly scenes depicted in its illustrations' - Just Imagine Centre

All the drawings are so great. I love the story because it tells us about the tiny bit of water and its journey from small to big oceans. And, in a country far away, the mist that has evaporated from the sea turns into rain and provides water for a thirsty girl to drink. As rain starts to fall, he empties his little jar of water into the pool and races the sparkling streams as they tumble over waterfalls, rush through swollen rivers and burst out into the vast open sea. A picture book that is educational, relaxing, and absolutely gorgeous? I am totally here for it! Also, since it has been 30°C degrees here (86°F), I have been longing for it to rain, who would have thought I would ever say that? Your class will add int he words to complete the sentences and look for simpler synonyms for the vocabulary chosen for this KS1 activity. This KS1 resource is based on the popular book The Rhythm of the Rain, which is best suited for the water topic. Last half term, as part of our rivers topic, Year 3/4 children read a book called 'The Rhythm of the Rain' by Grahame Baker-Smith. I enjoyed the book very much. My favourite part of it was when he followed the river to the sea and met all the animals and discovered new parts of the world. The real triumph of this book is in the almost otherworldly scenes depicted in its illustrations: the shimmering reflections around the water in Isaac’s pool; the solitary sperm whale alone in a dark and expansive sea; the spray of a waterfall as it cascades down to somewhere out of sight far below. Rhythm of the Rain : Baker-Smith, Grahame, Baker-Smith The Rhythm of the Rain : Baker-Smith, Grahame, Baker-Smith

written by Angela McAllister. Farther, which uses photographic collage and illustration, is the first book that Grahame has written and illustrated. It won the Greenaway Medal in 2011. Constantly experimenting with different styles of illustration, Grahame likes to challenge the conventional boundaries with his artwork. The Rhythm of the Rain is poetically written, yet it’s very clear and concise so I think children of all ages will understand the themes here, and with discussion it would be perfect for use in schools. It’s gentle and rhythmic and very easy to read out loud. Grahame Baker-Smith is a huge talent in picture book illustration, and his images of the natural world here are deep, vibrant and painterly, which will absorb slightly older picture book readers in their watery depths.' - Book Trust I think it is fantastic that you can enjoy reading this story just before bedtime, because of its astonishing artwork and poetic sentences. At the same time, this picture book is perfect to teach about the water cycle, both in the classroom or when homeschooling. Our servers are getting hit pretty hard right now.
