Description

He’s an astronaut, and he’s currently orbiting the earth on the International Space Station, about 400kms above the planet’s surface. T. There is some real science and maths in here, too (Fibonacci sequence, golden ratio, how astronauts got to the toilet) as well as some big sci-fi ideas. Unfortunately, the equation does not give an exact number, as we cannot accurately estimate most of its parameters (such as, for example, “how many planets that could support life have actually developed life”).

He also works as a freelance publisher and education consultant and has written several publications about encouraging children to read. With family drama and alien intrigue, this captures both the wonder of space and the complexity of growing up. Jamie's Dad is going to miss his birthday, but it isn't really his fault as he's an astronaut on the International Space Station! All that being said, I enjoyed The Jamie Drake Equation quite a lot, and would highly recommend it to any science-minded middle schooler.Jamie Drake is your average boy with one big exception, his dad is an astronaut on the international space station and he is part of a big mission to find life in outer space. I was also glad that we touched the sacrifices one partner makes so that the bread-winner can fulfil his career ambitions. The fact that Jamie's parents are struggling and that everything is not as perfect as it might seem adds to the book's accessibility and makes it easy for readers to relate to some of Jamie's feelings of fear and disappointment.

Perhaps it is this balance that has allowed me to enjoy the genre, as I was able to feel the intrigued and wonder about space, without drowning in Scientific fact.I think this book would be good for children with an interest in STEM subjects, to encourage them to read fiction. Young male protagonists who have problems centered around inability to express their emotion and communicate with others having all their problems solved by the arrival of aliens.

My instant reaction is that this book does for middle grade fiction what the Big Bang Theory does for sitcoms – it brings science to life.Jamie’s fight for his dad is heartwarming; the pride he has for his family, combined with the way he helps his sister both brought tears to my eyes when reading. When not writing, he also works as a freelance publisher and education consultant, and has written publications about encouraging children to read. They're currently locked in a battle for who will borrow the book first to reread, and when voting for our next class book, the only option they were interested in was something by Christopher Edge. I wish I had this book to explain some of the grittier details of astronomy to me when I was a freshman in college.
