Consequently, parents will be hiding their wallets while trying to ignore their young offspring. Similarly, there are only so many times you can use the same kind of tension-diffusing gag of closeups of serious dialogue being undercut by snarky responses (as dramatic music cuts to silence) before it feels mechanical. To make matters worse, it’s almost always Krypto or Ace doing the snarking, so the reactions are rarely loaded with something worthwhile. Johnson and Hart’s apparent improv is filled less with actual jokes — i.e. setups and punchlines — and more with off-the-cuff references to nothing in particular, as if outtakes were all that were recorded. It’s palpably, painfully awkward, making for the kind of animated movie where even children are at a loss for when to laugh, or what to laugh at (the kids at my screening weren’t having a very good time). DC League of Super-Pets: The Adventures of Krypto and Ace was developed by PHL Collective, a studio that’s increasingly improving its reputation with licensed games inspired by Nintendo titles, with an easier, more accessible gameplay loop than their sources of inspiration. Their Addams Family game was a love letter to Super Mario 3D World, with this brand new game being clearly inspired by one of Nintendo’s more neglected franchises: Star Fox. In short, this game is basically the most kid-friendly alternative to Star Fox you can find in the market: an on-rails flying shooter with powerups, special moves, and a ton of robotic spaceships to blow up.

Alongside this, there are side missions the further you progress. My kids adored this out-of-course situation, but I saw it as unnecessary padding. However, I enjoyed the deviation from the normal gameplay. Instead of fighting waves of robots, you spend your time dodging cars and weaving between buildings.

In terms of its visuals, the game is muddy, devoid of proper anti-aliasing, and its framerate is far from ideal. It’s uncapped, meaning it can occasionally run at more than 30fps, and, more often than not, below that threshold. The game never chugs massively, but it’s still annoying. It’s a shame, as the titular characters are superbly well-animated, and the game features some interesting enemy designs. The sound department isn’t much better, with a lot of mediocre voice acting from people attempting to impersonate the actors from the main motion picture (kudos on the dude hired to impersonate Kevin Hart, however). Though much of the gameplay isn’t a direct representation of the upcoming film, it has clearly taken inspiration from it. DC League of Super-Pets follows the action of Krypto and Ace as they take to the skies to take down Lex Luthor. This world-famous villain has captured the stray pets of Metropolis and imprisoned them in hisLexZoo. Determined to beat Lex and free the animals, Krypto and Ace must destroy the LexBots, free the pets, and save the day.Play as laser-eyed super-dog Krypto or Batarang-powered Ace. It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s the DC Super-Pets! In Super Auto Pets you build a team from a lovable cast of animals who will fight for you. They each have unique abilities, so choose wisely who will join your team! BLAST THE BOTS – Protect the streets of Metropolis, avoid the obstacles, and take on the evil LexBots Like its peers, DC League of Super-Pets has some replay value. Because every stage is ranked, you can try to beat your score on each. Other than this, there is little reason to return once you complete it. Annoyingly, the developers missed an opportunity by not including aspeedrunmode or collectables to find. Had this been done, the longevity would have been vastly increased. DC League of Super-Pets: amazing for kids, not so much for adults.
