Description

Released from obscurity, the NeoLucida entreats a new generation of artists to ask: " What if you could trace what you see? Even our smallest, most affordable model, the LUCY mini, outperforms both NEOLUCIDAs, while costing less. You have to place your eye fairly close to the eyepiece, so your glasses might touch the eyepiece during use.

Since that time, in close collaboration with our manufacturing partners, Big Idea Design, we have shipped more than 25,000 NeoLucida devices all over the world. Famed English astronomer Sir John Herschel was an avid user of the Camera Lucida, and often drew with friends on holiday.

Set up the NeoLucida Plus to look at a printed image or a computer screen and make a hand-drawn copy! My mission has always been to build the best drawing tool possible, inspired by the time-tested technologies of the old masters. I use a pencil at arms length to layout a page and get proportions of a landscape like a photo - my eyes are an imperfect camera (but sometimes the distortions are part of the art). I make models to help making drawing beyond my ability to invent in my mind, but the art part happens before rendering an image, and how it is finished off.

I love looking into such devices and theories in which photography and photographic based tools/techniques are more embedded in traditional art practice than we think. A significant advantage of using the LUCY over an electric projector is that an electric projector generates heat, which can melt frosting. Set up a bouquet of flowers, a bowl of fruit, your favorite stuffed animal, or even a replica skull from anatomy class and use the NeoLucida Plus to capture it from any angle! The thesis elevates the artists to new heights, suggesting their hinger for experimentation, for their technical prowess in inventing or recognizing an invention’s potential to contribute to their artmaking. We admire the Old Masters, toobut especially, because of the evidence of their intrepid willingness to experiment and engage with the most advanced imaging technologies of their time. For full details on this work, and other deep dives into this magnificent painting, see the Art Institute of Chicago Online Scholarly Catalogue. It uses a precision glass prism to combine a virtual ghost image of your subject and the real view of your hand.

The NeoLucida is inspired by a long history of optical drawing tools, modernized using 21st century manufacturing and materials.

Hockney’s art-first approach—using the tool, testing the idea through drawing—was an invitation to try it and join him in this exploration of art history. Yet there are many artists out there where the actual act of making is integral to the work, as if the final piece is almost akin to a byproduct. In 1833, while in Italy with his good friend William Henry Fox Talbot, that he became witness and accomplice to the most revolutionary moment in imaging.
