Bateman’s wit carries this: as thrillers go, Divorcing Jack is laugh-out-loud funny – in a dark and violent way. I am already familiar with several flavors of noir : classic 1940's West Coast, East Coast, Florida camp, Scandinavian bleak, Scottish rumpus (Brookmyre).

There I was, expecting this to be another British 1990s comedy caper and what I got was, well, sort of that? Then again, the film doesn't try to be serious: it's an out-and-out chase movie, stuffed with visual gags and boasting a fine comedy script which bends the ear with delight. This gallery is dedicated to some of the best fiction and nonfiction portraying one of the greatest cities in the world. Given that what’s happening in Northern Ireland isn’t exactly to be taken lightly, it’s to be expected that, in the U.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Adapted by Bateman himself it is faithful to the novel, which means the style on screen is the same no holds barred, NI wit and sardonic, jet black comic take on life that appeared on the page too. There's a little piece of trivia in the book that almost passes unnoticed but it is enough to make me not want to find out more about the game of Irish roulette: it involves a petrol bomb and an ability to blow out matches very quickly. The sarcasm and fallibility of a hero doing all the wrong things for all the drunk reasons plays beautifully against the fast paced nature of this thriller. The larger plot seems a bit ridiculous truth be told, but in Bateman's debut novel you see him finding his brilliant beta male voice infused alternately with sarcasm and feebleness that manifests itself so excellently in "Mystery Man. On wife Patricia: "She had done more damage to my nose in three years of marriage than twenty years of amateur football. I think Sean Duffy’s first involved a homosexual element in the IRA, and a rent boy: now that was unexpected – and the characters felt more complex, and real. As Dan noted himself, he feels like Richard Hannay in John Buchan’s famous novel The Thirty- Nine Steps. While at Brinn's residence, it is revealed that Margaret is the daughter of an old friend of Brinn, a man who is also a prominent politician in Brinn's party.

Make no mistake, the movie has nothing to say about the Troubles; in fact, it may even offend some with its offhand remarks. But it's all so hugely good-natured and entertaining that it's easy to forgive its flaws -- even the fistful of implausibilities like Starkey's escape from a house under SAS siege (he jumps out the window).
