Ok I'm obsessed with Candice Brathwaite anyway, she's my favourite person at the moment and this book was sooooooo shock twisty twisters I could almost hear her voice in my head as I read the words revealing who Isaac was. London is everything to Cynthia, so when her parents move her to a place where there is only one bus an hour and the faint smell of horse manure continuously permeates the air, it's a culture shock, to say the least.

Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ. Author, journalist and TV presenter, Candice Brathwaite started utilizing the internet in 2015 to tell her own motherhood story. It’s a soul-wrenching moment of realising that love is timeless and the reason why grief doesn’t leave. Almost impossible to get Canadian and Australian books, though, which stifles my reading on Indigenous peoples somewhat! I’m a full on CB fan girl but that aside; the plot, the characters and the south London feel dragged me in, hooked after one chapter. Nevertheless, Candice explains how the beauty standard has made Black girls relax their hair in the past. Candice is a Contributing Editor to Grazia and regularly appears on radio and television news channels to talk about maternal mortality rates for black women in Britain.

She cleverly structures it around the stages of pregnancy, birth and childhood, weaving in her personal memoir and sometimes horrific experiences among more general stats and stories.Cuts Both Ways tells the story of Cynthia—a 16-year-old from North London—who just moved to Buckinghamshire with her parents following the tragic loss of her brother. Ultimately, Brathwaite emphasises how your most important relationship is the one you have with yourself, leaving the book with an impactful message of empowerment and self-respect. This is a good book about the Black British experience (and also has some interesting contrasts between British Caribbean and British African families) although a lot of quite challenging detail about birth and health issues. Written in Candice’s trademark straight-talking, warm and funny style, it will delight her fans, old and new. I am no stranger to Candice Brathwaite’s writing; I'm certainly not a fan, but I do believe she has produced much better work than this without sounding too rude.

Candice explains how she would spend ages getting her hair done and the way society viewed her for having 4c hair was internalised. But eventually, you reach a mindset where you just decide that you cannot force yourself to post everyday because I’m exhausted after work.In a nutshell, Cuts Both Ways follows teenage Cynthia as she moves home and schools, from London to Buckinghamshire. WHATEVER THE MEDIUM, CANDICE IS STRAIGHT-TALKING AND EXUBERANT, INTENT ON SHOWING THE JOY TO BE HAD IN BEING YOUNG, BLACK, AND BRITISH.
