David Lynch: New Paintings, James Corcoran Gallery, Santa Monica, California, August 12–September 2, 1989.

David Lynch’s five-decade career spans an extensive range of artmaking including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, music, and film.Though famous for being a filmmaker and co-creator of the TV series Twin Peaks, David Lynch works in many other mediums, including music, sculpture, photography, furniture-making, and painting, the last of which is the wellspring of his creativity. Lynch has painted since the 1960s, finding his voice among the ruinous squalor of a once-rough Philadelphia. Inspired by artists such as Francis Bacon, Lynch developed a style that’s rich in the irreconcilable contradictions that would drive his cinema. His paintings are beautiful yet macabre, mysterious and rich in the tactility of the methods of their creation. David Lynch: Chaos Theory of Violence and Silence, La Foret Museum, Tokyo, November 10–December 2, 2012. (Catalogue) Dark Night of the Soul (exhibition catalogue). Written and produced by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse; visuals by David Lynch. New York: PowerHouse Books, 2009. A unique reading experience; more experimental novel than straight up biography. In brief chapters, Lynch explains the development of his ideas - where they came from, how he grasps them, and which ones appeal to him the most. He specifically discusses how he puts his thoughts into action and how he engages with others around him. Finally, he considers the self and the surrounding world - and how the process of "diving within" that has so deeply affected his own work can directly benefit others. A large canvas standing in the middle of the studio, an unfinished work, depicts a tree with children. Closer scrutiny reveals that the boy standing at the base is holding a knife. A girl on the branch above is cowering. Another girl is dangling from a noose. Neither look like candidates for good, long, happy lives.

Lynch also revealed that he initially turned down Steven Spielberg’s offer to play a cameo in The Fabelmans as celebrated director John Ford, saying that he recommended fellow director Peter Bogdanovich instead. However, he said he had been persuaded by his Wild at Heart actor Laura Dern; he did not confirm that he had requested Cheetos on set, but did say he felt comfortable in the costume that the film had provided: “It was pretty much my kind of clothes: I like high-waisted pants.” David Lynch: Recent Drawings, James Corcoran Gallery, Santa Monica, California, September 10–October 8, 1987. Dusi, Nicola and Cinzia Bianchi. David Lynch: Mondi Intermediali. Milano, Italy: FrancoAngeli, 2019. It’s a scene that might be intimidating were it not for a great, largely untold secret: David Lynch is a cheery, congenial soul who rivals the Simpsons character Ned Flanders for howdy-doody niceness. “Hey, bud!” he greets the assistant, offering me a handshake and wide smile. He laughs, often, and yearns for peace on Earth. “I love my life and I’m a happy camper,” he says. “It would be nice if we were all able to fulfil our desires and live good, long, happy lives.” David Lynch: Between Two Worlds, Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, Queensland, March 14–June 7, 2015. (Catalogue)INLAND EMPIRE’ (2006) was filmed entirely on a Sony DSR-PD150 camera: “The transition to digital was happening, people weren’t interested in cinema, and the art houses were dying like the plague. Eventually there will be no theatres and the majority of people will see films on their computers or on their phones.” In Catching the Big Fish, internationally acclaimed filmmaker David Lynch provides a rare window into his methods as an artist, his personal working style, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation.
