The final chapters of I LET YOU GO do allow for a certain amount of ambiguity. Ian’s body has not yet been recovered, and Jenna catches a glimpse of what she fears might be writing in the sand; writing that could only be from Ian. I won't bother with a plot summary because I would need to either reveal spoilers or deliberately mislead you. The GR description tells you all you need to know. The first half of the book was very very slow. I can actually understand the comparisons to Gone Girl because it has that same drawn out who even cares? first half that is turned on its head by a twist. We move between Jenna-- as she takes some photos, gets a dog and starts a new romance in Wales --and the lead detective, Ray, who manages to be even more boring than Jenna. Jacob, a young boy, has been hit by a speeding car on a dark and rainy night. The driver, rather than stopping, speeds away leaving the boy's mother traumatized and distraught. Not knowing how to handle her own grief, she flees in effort to escape everything that has just unfolded.

NOTHING TOO INSPIRING ABOUT THAT..... (about JENNA). Our main character, Jenna, is the sculptor, no longer sculpting and mother without a child. In If I Let You Go we meet Janet, a cleaner, a wife and mourning the loss of her daughter eleven years previously. We peek behind the outward face of Janet to see how she navigates life as the day that would have been her daughter's eighteenth birthday. A clever thriller that boasts fine writing, compelling characters, and mind-bending twists * Booklist *But Janet's story isn't quite what it seems, and as events spiral out of control, she soon discovers that coming clean isn't an option. Because if Janet washes away the lies, what long-buried truths will she finally have to face. Full of twists and turns, I was gripped by the storyline. I did get a brief sense of deja vu - as I read a book last year The Bed I Made which also involves a young woman who moves to a secluded area to escape her past. But I guess that's quite a popular trope in the mystery/thriller genre. The novel opens in a prologue describing a terrible accident. A mother lets go of her son Jacob’s hand, and a car strikes him with such force the boy’s body hits the windshield. The driver races away. The incident catches the public imagination because of the horror of the death of the child and the fact that the driver cannot be found. A team of Bristol Criminal Investigation Division (CID) detectives, led by Ray Stevens and younger police officer Kate Evans, are assigned to solve the crime. As they work the case, devastated young mother Jenna Gray escapes to the Welsh coast to deal with her grief. I read I Let You Go in two sittings; it made me cry (at least twice), made me gasp out loud (once) and above all made me wish I'd written it. Absorbing, authentic and deeply unsettling: a stellar achievement, and so deliciously clever * Elizabeth Haynes * As the story develops and we learn the full extent of the circumstances surrounding Janets past, I felt even more for her and boy did I want to slap her husband Colin! Though he is dealing with his own grief, his treatment of Janet and his emotional control of her was hard to read in places.

This book had me guessing literally through the last lines of the epilogue.Janet Brown works as a cleaner and she’s a very good one too as she finds gleaming surfaces calming. She’s married to Colin, who seems to punish her for any minor infraction as he sees it. One evening, she’s had as much as she can take and she makes a break for it channelling her inner Thelma or Louise. What follows on has far-reaching consequences she could not have foreseen as things utterly spiral out of control.
