However it’s a bit concerning that the author actively encourages people visiting Bob Scott’s Bothy to go out and cut up deadwood for the stove. Given the importance, position and popularity of Corrour, I would have thought it would be a definite inclusion. Some are glaring but relatively harmless, such as referring to the Gelder Shiel as Glendar Shiel, Derry Cairngorm as Derry Hill, and Loch Avon as Loch A’an. The format of the book is simple and effective, our country is divided into its national constituents, unsurprisingly Scotland gets the lion’s share of attention – with 18 bothies covered, add to this four bothies each for England and Wales and the book describes 26 bothies out of 100 or so officially cared-for by the MBA. Now and again the owner of a particular bothy may impose restrictions on the use of their property, such as during the deer stalking season in Scotland or during lambing. I have to admit I had never come across the term "Bothy" and was intrigued when the book landed on my door mat. The AGM would have been more bearable if the weather outside hadn’t been so spectacularly good, but it was great to meet Heavy and have a chat with him before his talk.I picked this book up about a year ago and have been slowly working my way through the locations in the book. We have used them countless times and they've always provided excellent insight and knowledge that you only get through experience, giving you the edge to make your trip a success and more enjoyable too. Many of these tales reveal the difficulties of life in past years in some of Britain's remotest outposts. The purpose was to improve them, and if an improved service doesn’t attract more use then you’ve just wasted a lot of time and effort. Written by the founder of the ‘Bothies on a Bike’ blog, it offers detailed information on the locations and approach routes by foot, canoe and bicycle and highlights the best bothies for Munros, beach, seclusion and families.

I really enjoyed reading through this book, and I can’t wait to get out and try staying in a few this autumn. The majority of Bothies are maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association are were relatively secret until a few years ago. Action is subordinate to suspense and the burgeoning dread as everyone anticipates the outcome when the inevitable confrontation occurs. There are still folk in the MBA who would prefer if it was a secret society with passwords and handshakes. Trevor Mark Thomas’s first novel is a tense, violent drama involving desperate characters with little to lose apart from their lives.

For each bothy featured there is an Ordnance Survey map with grid reference and descriptions of two access routes, one the direct or “classic” with a longer “challenging” alternative for hill-baggers and those who have time and inclination. On the way to the bothy you’ll pass above the abandoned village of Erisco – now nothing more than a few foundation walls and piles of rocks from about eight drystone-walled buildings.

The issue that irks me is that the author is effectively exploiting the bothy network for personal gain and publicity.

But the devil is in the detail – guidebooks are built on attention detail – and it’s just such a damned shame that she didn’t do more checking and get her book more rigorously proofed. g. romantic, solitude, Munroes, beaches, etc); explores the work of the Mountain Bothy Association; gives advice on Hill craft and staying safe.Or asking if I helped criminals pay their fines because I used to make money writing about their court cases. There’s something special about the Isle of Skye – the constant sea views, the layer upon layer of volcanic rock scoured into other-worldly shapes and towers.
