Things get off to a bit of a rocky start when a strange boy shows up in her Dad's place to pick her up from the airport. Let me just say that meeting your father for the first time after years of feeling like some moldy bread that they decided to throw out, is probably the closest I've felt to wanting to kill someone else while also wanting to jump into the nearest body of water just so I wouldn't have to face the agony of having a civil conversation. People and events aren't black or white, more than one thing can be true about them at the same time.

I think, when you’re starting out, your pace and your skill level can be really mismatched, which is frustrating.Liv Varanakis is surprised when she receives a postcard from her father asking her to travel to Greece to stay with him. It’s not like I was an active aqua phobic carrying nine years of emotional baggage onto a boat held together by duck tape. There are so many questions, so many emotions that flood to the surface after seeing her father for the first time in years. She's losing herself, sacrificing things she enjoys, to spend as much time as she can doing what her boyfriend wants to do. Even so, she can’t help but be charmed by everything that Santorini has to offer—the beautiful sunsets, the turquoise water, the sun-drenched villages, and the delicious cuisine.

also, this was cute and nice and insanely readable considering how long it was (and how, uh, unnecessary said length was). My real complaint with this book is that it just kinda felt like a lot of YA contemporary from 2014 through 2016 in that it was cute and I liked it, but it lacked a little something to me. The way everything ties back to Atlantis works perfectly with the end message of the novel and it’s just so good and you need to read it now I am begging y’all. I also hate his manipulative, selfish ex-boyfriend and I was pissed off when she didn't break up with him earlier.I think the way the story explored the reasons why he disappeared and why he’d wanted to be a part of Liv’s life again were ultimately satisfying.

I really didn’t like that he filmed her without her permission and ignored her when she asked him to stop. When Liv receives a postcard from her father inviting her to Greece to help him with his documentary, she is hesitant to reconnect with him. In addition to European settings and conflicted main characters, all of your books include a romantic plotline as well.During the summer, Dax spends twenty to thirty hours a week in a pool, and he wears chlorine the way other guys wear cologne. Love and Gelato is one of my favorite reads, but I was hesitant to read Jenna Evans Welch’s other books. My overall feelings for the main character plummeted after learning what her secret was along with how dull and unconnected I felt towards the romance. One day, she gets a postcard from him inviting her to Santorini to help with his documentary on Atlantis.

On the other hand, we can really feel the pain she feels from the abandonment and repressed emotions, so it is understanding why she avoids close connections. I am an occasional Star Wars–quoter, a collage artist, and a friend to all houseplants, but when Dax and I first started dating, I’d casually agreed with him when he mentioned how much he loved running in the mornings, and here we were. I think it’s easy for adults to look down on the relationships we form as teenagers as a simple or small thing, but I think those early [romantic] relationships are important. It's incredibly hard for outsiders to truly grasp how it feels to reconnect with a parent when you're a teenager. Her not knowing if she should follow her boyfriend to Stanford or if she should chase her own dreams was very realistic and a problem I could relate to.

My biggest struggle with this book surrounded Liv’s father’s actual reason for asking her to fly out to help him. Summary (From the publisher):Liv Varanakis doesn’t have a lot of fond memories of her father, which makes sense—he fled to Greece when she was only eight. I blew the ends of my sweaty bangs out of my eyes and attempted yet another ponytail, but my chin-length hair was too short. The other characters were also all very lovable (except Dex) and I loved seeing Liv grow so much in just 10 days. Perhaps I knew it would be hard to top the predecessor, or maybe I was just lazy (probably the latter), but it took me over two years to approach Love and Olives.
