The small-town-with-magic setting is just as charming as the characters and made me want to visit Glimmer Falls. These two lovely characters, with major insecurities, are then at odds because Oz can't leave til he completes a deal with Mariel for her soul and she's unwilling to bargain. I did like that Mariel had her best friends though and that she found joy in her nature magic, which was incredibly strong (even if everyone else trivialized it).

She explored a sense of strength in sticking up for herself and what she loves alongside many other empathetic topics. But generally it's a very light read (chicken aside), so if you're not looking for anything serious or hard to read, then this is perfect.

But Ozroth has a limited amount of time to strike the deal, and if Mariel gives up her soul, she’ll lose all her emotions—including love—which will only spell disaster for them both. She twisted it so suddenly that I was left wondering why she felt it important to make it that he wasn't allowed a voice or an opinion or to stand up for the woman he was falling in love with. Mariel Spark knows not to trust a demon, especially one that wants her soul, but what’s a witch to do when he won’t leave her side—and she kind of doesn’t want him to?

There are also some bumpy times on their path to their HEA, but they do fall in love and they do get steamy. I loved the awkwardness of the relationship – what exactly does a witch do with a sexy demon that she’s summoned? It isn't quite gritty enough to work as a Urban Fantasy novel but readers of that genre needing a bit af easy escapism would probably agree with me that it is well worth a side trip.Hawley's Mariel and Oz are both such delightful and charming characters, both separately and together, and her writing is infused with such effortless humor. It was just a big shame because this story was perfect, it had a good premise, a balance of humour and seriousness, a plot that drove the story ans then doom, it was all shattered. While the cliche of 'witch summons sexy demon and, of course, they fall in love ' can get boring after a while, I read this in one sitting so don't let the stars deter you. I must admit, Mariel is so much stronger than I am because this book was way more slow burn than I would’ve been able to manage. The story in A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon is a standalone novel that is told by changing the point of view between the main characters.
