About this deal

The shoe may not wow you with its performance, or be the envy of onlooking eyes, but it’s consistent in its ride and doesn’t try to be something it’s not. This is a daily trainer without bells and whistles, that works just fine. Who should buy the Gel Cumulus 23 A 3D SPACE CONSTRUCTION has been added to the top layer of the midsole to improve cushioning and flexibility. On the flip side of the coin, you get Asics’ “plain” shoes, their bread and butter trainers that are consistent, dependable and give you what you expect.

And among the most significant changes are the gender-specific features on the Cumulus 23. As mentioned above, the midsole’s cushion is different in both men’s and women’s shoes, and the Trusstic System™ provides support. I think this helped make a huge difference because this shoe felt great on my feet. When I first saw pictures of the Cumulus 23 online, my initial thought was that it looks very similar to the Nimbus 23. Derek: I wear US9.5 in both shoes. Both shoes are quite similar in terms of how much they flex through the toes. I think the 880 has better vibration dampening and is a little bouncier especially in the forefoot. That said, I think the Cumulus has a more relaxed fit to it and a roomier and slightly wider toebox and thus is maybe preferable for people looking for an easy day shoe that is more on the traditional side.ASICS kept the Gel Cumulus under 10 ounces (9.8 ounces/277g) which is great. It’s not overly heavy and as a daily trainer, it’s actually decent in the weight category. Derek: Aesthetically the Cumulus 23 I received didn’t quite jump out at me. ASICS can be quite bold with their upper designs, but this one’s pretty muted by comparison. Lacing up the shoes, I am immediately reminded of how good ASICS is at making shoes fit well without overly complicated upper constructs. Dialing in the fit was a breeze and the fit is true to size for me. Walking and jogging around, there is good forefoot flex in the shoe, but not a whole lot of bounce from the midsole. In fact the shoe feels just a tad lumpy, like I can feel the outsole rubber through the midsole. It’s a lukewarm start to this review. Another great feature that I appreciate about the fit is how easy it is to slide these on and off. The interior is really smooth, which helps.

When ASICS kindly sent me a pair of the new Gel-Cumulus™ 23 it was an easy ask to write a review. These are my sixth pair of Gel-Cumulus™ and they really do just keep getting better and better. In a world where daily trainers have carbon plates and super foam midsoles, the dependable ASICS Cumulus 23 still doesn’t feel like a boring shoe. Sam: The new rubber pattern here reminds of the Nimbus Lite but in more segmented narrower bands upfront with a lateral focused decoupling groove. This shoe is perfect for those runners who want a shoe they can lace up for any jog without having to contemplate what type of run they’ll be doing and which shoes match that intention. Decent weight for a daily trainer

Engineered mesh upper adds strategic support in targeted areas while leaving some of the fibres open to improve breathability. The upper is dense and padded without any real venting. The idea is the weave is just loose enough to dissipate heat. However, it feels a bit warm on hot days.
